那個年代，要拍攝和觀看影片可不像現在的手機或DVD那麼簡單。看過史匹柏的電影《超級8》嗎？ 當時家庭電影還在使用8釐米底片(film) 。底片是一種兩邊有著排孔的膠捲，把它裝入攝影機裡，拍完再經過沖洗後，以專用的放映機播放。當時的影片一律是無聲的，播放時只聽見底片在走的啪啪啪聲音。一開始是黑白畫質 ，到了1970年以後才有彩色。播放時像電影一樣投射在銀幕，沒有銀幕的話，白色的牆壁也可以。

祖父的兒子們依年紀可分為二個世代，四叔之前是一個世代，五叔之後又是另一個世代。定居大社初期，未婚的三位叔叔陸續由青少年進入青年，創意和活力都旺盛，但他們的交遊並不廣。究其原因，一方面或許是當時風氣保守，另一方面可能來自曾祖父、祖父一脈相傳的孤僻以及偏安的家風所致。再者，置身一個廣闊的莊園、擁有那麼多的家人，休閒時光其實很好打發，所以也不需要甚麼朋友。小時候，只見過他們帶著全班來家裡玩，極少有個別朋友造訪。
